Pillalamarri is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Mahabubnagar and is celebrated as one of the oldest and largest banyan trees in India. Believed to be over 800 years old, this magnificent tree spreads across nearly three acres, creating a natural canopy supported by hundreds of aerial roots.

The name “Pillalamarri” translates to “The Banyan Tree of Children” in Telugu. According to local tradition, the tree symbolizes prosperity, longevity, and family unity. Today, it attracts thousands of visitors, nature lovers, students, and pilgrims throughout the year.

Beyond the tree itself, the surrounding tourism complex features museums, landscaped gardens, children’s play areas, and cultural exhibits, making it a popular destination for families and tourists.

Historical Background: 

Pillalamarri has stood as a silent witness to centuries of Mahabubnagar’s history. Local legends suggest that the tree has existed since the 13th century, surviving the rule of several dynasties, including the Kakatiyas, Bahmanis, Qutb Shahis, and the Nizams of Hyderabad.

Over time, the site evolved into an important cultural and recreational landmark. Recognizing its historical and ecological significance, the Telangana Government developed the area with visitor-friendly facilities while ensuring the preservation of the ancient tree.
